Now rewind the clock 60 years from now and look back at an event that was called the October Crisis of 1962. This event was triggered when the then Soviet Union had to engage in a tense political and military standoff with America over the installation of nuclear-armed missiles in Cuba, just 90 miles away from the American shores. This strong American reaction was the result of the insecurity they had felt after they realized that the Soviet nuclear missile base was being established so close to their backyard. Back to the present day, Russia had been feeling the same insecurity when America with its NATO allies was trying to establish a permanent base in Ukraine, which is situated right in the backyard of Russia.
It was a different era in 1962, when both America and Soviet Union were equally powerful and mighty. But when Americans did the same misadventure in 2022 in Ukraine, they did it on a whim that the current day Russia, which in their opinion largely stood on the disintegrated remains of erstwhile Soviet Union, would never show the same hostility as they did in 1962. And for a while, it did seem that Russia was not responding to their efforts to include Ukraine as a NATO country and make it an ally of the west. But this was not true at all, because Russia was not only feeling the heat generated by the expansionist policy of America and its allies, it was feeling more and more cornered by the constant bullying of the western world.
And as we know what happens when you try to mess with a sleeping lion; this is exactly what is happening now in case of Russia. America and its allies pushed Russia so much into a corner that Russia was left with no option but to rise against this external threat, which was beginning to threaten its sovereignty. The war Russia is waging on Ukraine is its only resort to rise against the forces of the west, who are trying to install a world order that suits their liberal and open way of life. They simply don’t understand that there are parts of the world that like to live in ways that are completely different from the west; and they have been doing so for centuries.
